MAY I HAVE THE PLEASURE OF THIS DANCE?
Some thoughts on the etiquette of Scottish Country Dancing
1. Scottish Country Dancing is social dancing and everyone should be made to
feel welcome.
2. When asked to form a set, the man will invite the lady to join him and they may
walk to the top of the set as 1st couple.
When this happens, the other couples should assume their places from 2C position
through to 4C
3. 1C is the guide for line-out for the rest of the set, this helps to keep the set lines
in good order. Keep an eye on them!
4. Crossing of partners: lady always passes in front of the man.
5. Rights & lefts: the polite turn is always done on the last turn
6. At a dance: 1M counts off his couples in the set and if more are needed he will
inform the caller by putting up his hand.
7. Poussette: man always has palms uppermost ready to support the lady.
This is so in two handed turns.
8. Handing: helpful and courteous use of hands is an essential part of Scottish
Country Dancing
9. Eye contact: always keep your eye contact with your partner, be aware of
coming moves and look pleased to see each and every dancer.
Also keep an eye on who is coming your way in the dance!
